Director, Producer

"I think there are maybe two ways to shoot a scene. And the other one is wrong"

Born in Rome on the same day as Sergio Leone, Dario Cioni grew up on science fiction, comic books and cinema. He studied photography at the Roberto Rossellini Film School before moving into filmmaking, first as a photojournalist and soon after as a 1st Assistant Director.

At 22 he moved to Los Angeles, later relocating to London, building a career across international productions. As an Assistant Director he worked with George Lucas on Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and on more than 400 commercials with directors including Wes Anderson, Tony Scott, Tim Burton, Errol Morris, Antoine Fuqua, Tarsem Singh, Luca Guadagnino and Paolo Sorrentino.

As a director, Cioni moves between film, commercials and music projects. His work includes the feature Paper’s Tigers, the mockumentary A Viking on the Croisette, and collaborations with artists such as Vinicio Capossela.

As a producer he was behind the feature film Hannah, which premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival and earned Charlotte Rampling the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress. His producing work also includes the historical drama series Domina.

He has also worked on international productions including Point Break (2016) and produced commercial projects with directors such as Paolo Sorrentino, Wong Kar-wai and Terry Gilliam.

Before all that, in the 1990s, he helped bring comics like The Crow, The Sandman and Tank Girl to Italy — which probably explains everything.
